Bibiani Gold Stars CEO Kwesi Adu hails club financiers as ‘magicians’ amid sponsorship crisis

Akwasi Adu, the Chief Executive Officer of Bibiani Gold Stars, has publicly lauded the financiers and managers of Ghana Premier League (GPL) clubs, likening their efforts to those of “magicians” given the severe financial constraints they face due to the absence of a headline sponsor. As the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season progresses, it is increasingly likely to conclude without a primary sponsor, a situation that has placed significant strain on the operations of all 18 competing clubs.

In an interview with Citi Sports, Adu expressed deep admiration for the relentless dedication and resourcefulness of club managers and financiers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that weekly fixtures are fulfilled. He highlighted the logistical and financial challenges of sustaining club operations, particularly the burden of funding travel across Ghana’s regional boundaries without corporate backing. “On behalf of all 18 Premier League clubs, I must say that the managers and financiers are nothing short of magicians,” Adu stated. “Organizing and funding team travel across the country, week in and week out, without a sponsor is an extraordinary feat. We are all working diligently to address this sponsorship gap as swiftly as possible.”
Adu also shared that Bibiani Gold Stars are proactively seeking sponsorship opportunities to secure financial stability for the upcoming season. Despite the league’s challenges, the club has enjoyed a remarkable campaign, currently sitting at the top of the GPL standings with an impressive 54 points. Adu emphasized that the competitive intensity of this season’s title race, even in the face of adversity, underscores the resilience and quality of Ghanaian football. “The thrilling nature of this year’s competition should serve as a beacon for potential sponsors,” he noted. “We are optimistic that the excitement and talent on display will mark a turning point for local football, attracting the investment needed to elevate the league.”
Looking ahead, Bibiani Gold Stars, who are currently positioned second in the league table, are preparing for a crucial match against Asante Kotoko at DUN’s Park next weekend. A victory in this high-stakes encounter could further solidify their lead and bolster their championship aspirations. Adu’s comments reflect both the broader struggles of the GPL and the unwavering determination of its clubs to overcome obstacles and deliver a compelling season for fans. As the search for sponsorship continues, the resilience of Ghana’s football community remains a testament to the passion and commitment driving the sport forward.
